PAK, PASS combined team win JAPEM futsal tournament

THE Combined Team of Administration and Finance with Public Relations, Resources and Volunteers (PAK and PASS) emerged victorious in the 12th Department of Community Development Among Sections Futsal Championship after defeating Welfare Housing Complex 2-0 in the final at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex yesterday.

Two second-half goals from Ayadey and Pengiran Hannan sealed the title for the combined team and dethroned the cup holders.

The Public Relations, Resources and Volunteers enjoyed a positive start in the opening periods of the first half after managing three opportunities albeit without bearing any fruit in as many minutes.

Izzudin forced a corner after his attempt was deflected out for a corner with his teammate Zinie pulling the strings at the centre of the court with his silky touches.

The Welfare Housing Complex looked to find a footing in the game but Kamal skiied his effort wide before brushing the outside of the post from a tight angle in his immediate sight of the ball.

Izzudin volleyed his effort wide and his face was a picture of anguish sensing it was a chance passed to open the scoring.

There was an interesting battle developing between Pengiran Hannan and Irwan with the former bursting with pace and the latter could only foul him to stop him in his tracks.

Supardy of Welfare Housing Complex showed good imagination to provide a lofty ball for Azry but the latter steered his header wide.

Pengiran Hannan demonstrated his pace yet again winning a free-kick which Azry was unable to contain and the follow-up saw him unselfishly picking out Ayadey in the near post who invitingly struck home the opener.

The Welfare Housing Complex missed a chance to get back into level terms after a good team move materialised to nothing. Irwan rolled back the years with a touch reminiscent of his competitive career and played a pass to Azry who spotted Zaiful but he fluffed his lines.

Irwan then sliced his shot harmlessly wide as the reigning champions looked in search of an equaliser. The former Brunei star then picked out a pass for Azry whose shot was straight at the Public Relations’ goalkeeper Haji Khairul Ariffin.

However, Pengiran Hannan killed the game at the death after producing one of the most momentous strikes at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex.

Combined Team of PAK and PASS goalkeeper Haji Khairul Ariffin bin Haji Abdul Aji celebrated his third successive title having been in goal for Welfare Housing Complex in the previous two editions.

“We did not expect to win the tournament taking into consideration we have only started practice last week which is about five sessions playing together,” said Haji Khairul Ariffin who recently was transferred to another section within the department.

“The team gelled well even though we have outsiders within the team including the spouses of our officers. We invited them to play and even though we lost our first game 1-0, we know how to adjust,” he further added.

“Our adjustment was perfect and even though we are tired, we push ourselves and we support each other through the pain barrier.

“Even for myself, my wrist hurts because I got a kick but we just played on. We took one game at a time until the final,” said Haji Khairul Ariffin who has been an ever-present in the tournament since its inaugural edition in 2007.

Public Relations’ star Zinie proved to be a valuable asset in the team and Haji Khairul Ariffin was quick to point out his importance in the team.

“He is a pivot in our team and he is also one of the better players for us today,” he said.

Acting Director of Community Development Rostinah binti Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Sura Pahlawan Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Tahir presented the prizes.
